Luca strode through the hallway whistling. People were staring at him, which he didn’t usually like. At work, he’d gotten quite good at making himself utterly indispensable and also invisible. The essential right-hand man who allowed his boss to shine while he quietly crept closer to the top job. Business. He was great at it.

It was understandable if people stared today. Not that he was usually in a bad mood, but he’d bet his last dollar he appeared more carefree today than he ever had.

It had taken almost three weeks, multiple visits to his bank, late nights spent poring over spreadsheets and projections, as well as quietly talking to the million contacts he’d made in this town, but he was finally ready.

He’d bounded out of bed this morning, a weight lifted off his shoulders. His greatest source of stress and worry was gone, and he could move on with his life.

Maybe that life would include Elizabeth. He hoped it would. If it didn’t, well…

No, he wouldn’t think of that yet. Not now, when he had one last task to do here.

Richard’s secretary, Anna, was missing from her desk. He knocked on Richard’s door, idly wondering how many times he’d done just that over the past seven years. First when Aaron sat behind it, now with his son. All these years he’d been so focused on sitting behind that desk, he’d missed the point where he’d actually stopped wanting that chair.

When Richard responded, Luca walked in, pulling up short at the sight of the young blushing woman coming to her feet. She was from marketing, if he recalled correctly. Luca tried to keep his face expressionless, but he was certain some disapproval leaked into his voice. “I’m sorry, I thought you were alone.”

“Luca! No, please come in. Cherry and I were just finishing up.” He gave the woman a nod of dismissal, his charming smile covering up its curtness.

Luca was silent as the girl left and closed the door behind her. Not your business. Not your business. Not your business.

“How can I help you? Please, have a seat.”

He walked closer and dropped into the chair Richard indicated. He thought he might feel a twinge of worry or regret or anxiety. Nothing.

Except maybe a bit of awkwardness. He had, after all, never quit anything before. “Sir…”

“Richard.”

“Richard.” He cleared his throat. “I want to thank you for all the opportunities I’ve had here.”

Richard leaned back in his chair. “You sound serious, son.”

“I am.” Probably the best thing to do was to just get this over with. He slid the letter he carried across the table.

“What’s this?” Richard picked up the paper.

“My letter of resignation.”

Richard’s eyebrows shot up. “What?”

“I want to resign, Richard.” Ah. Now he didn’t feel awkward.

In terms of pure, instant relief, Luca imagined that drugs didn’t even feel this good.

“What—but—I just promoted you!”

“I know, and I thank you.”

“You can’t do this.”

“Actually, I have to do this.”

Richard glared at him. “Is this a bargaining ploy? What, the raise wasn’t enough for you?”

“No.”

“If you have an offer from a competitor, I’ll match it.
